Tuxedos Are a Necessary Component in One

Tuxedos were first mentioned in writing in 1889 and the term is used more often in the US than anywhere else in the world. Tuxedos or the tux refers to a formal coat that includes the evening tailcoat as well as the cutaway. The cutaway is referred to as a morning coat in the UK and the white tuxedo is referred to as a dinner jacket in North American. The same white dinner jacket is referred to as a tuxedo in the UK. Today the tuxedo is most prominently used at formal weddings, proms, fund raisers and black tie ocean cruises to name a few.

The look of the tuxedo has evolved through several stages from the original smoking jacket. The double breasted jackets and white jackets became acceptable formal wear for men in the 1930s. After WWII the tuxedo entered a reinterpretation phase. The color, texture and pattern became open to interpretation especially in the 1970s when the rental customers of the middle class indicated a preference for customizing their Tuxedos.

In the 1980s the business suit look with the 2 and 3 button jacket became incorporated into the tux. The notch lapel evolved into the common lapel style. The popular and trendy high fashion designers of today's contemporary world of fashion have given the tuxedo their own design interpretations.

Vests, lapels, jacket cuts, colors and fabrics are all open to re-interpretation. Pieces are borrowed to coordinate with other outfits such as the tuxedo vest. It has been incorporated into women's fashions also so that a fancy dress skirt will have a tuxedo vest as body hugging coordinate. Some women are wearing it as an alternative to an evening gown. It has become an androgynous wardrobe staple.

Currently, women's fashion consists of the tuxedo pants with cummerbund paired up with soft cashmere sweaters. The slouch tuxedo look is also trendy with a tailored pant and unbuttoned tuxedo jacket worn with a white, silk turtleneck underneath. The tuxedo look too has been presented in a red velvet fabric with wide peaked satin lapels. Underneath the look is enhanced with a black lace blouse and a perky, stand up collar.

This year too the bisque colored Marlene Dietrich tuxedo look has made a comeback. Marlene Dietrich first wore it in the movie Morocco in 1928 where she created quite a stir. The 1920s also saw Josephine Baker, Gloria Swanson and Katherine Hepburn wearing the tuxedo. There is virtually no one who does not look smart or alluring in Tuxedos.

The ubiquitous Tuxedos are made for babies and children. It is an outfit used by tap dancers and variations of it are worn at snooker competitions, casinos and horse racing events. The tuxedo has made its way into every possible venue where there is a requirement for formality and style.

Tuxedos have become signature outfits for some famous entertainers such as the pianist Liberace, James Bond and Louis Armstrong. It continues to evolve so that in today's fashion it is even worn with jeans and t-shirts. Like the denim jean it has been accepted as a timeless garment that is a necessary component in one's wardrobe.
